Meta Ads run on Facebook and Instagram, and they work differently from search advertising in one important way: nobody's looking for you. They're scrolling, watching, catching up with friends — and your ad has to earn attention it wasn't asked for.
That's not a weakness, it's a different kind of tool. Search finds people who already know they have a need. Meta finds people who fit the profile of someone who would want what you sell, and puts your business in front of them before they've gone looking anywhere else.
It's also how you reach the people who visited your site and left without buying or booking — through retargeting, showing ads to people who already visited your site. Those are often the warmest people you can advertise to, because they've already shown you they're interested.
How it actually works
Meta's ad system is built around two broad jobs: prospecting, which finds new people who look like your kind of customer, and retargeting, which brings back people who already interacted with your business. A healthy account usually runs both, because they solve different problems.
Instead of keywords, Meta targets by combining audience signals — things like interests, behaviors, and how closely someone resembles your existing customers — with placement, meaning which part of Facebook or Instagram the ad shows up in, whether that's the main feed, Stories, or Reels. The algorithm then learns from who engages and adjusts who it shows the ad to next.
Because attention is grabbed by what people see, not what they type, the ad itself carries far more weight here than it does in search. A slightly different image, video, or headline can perform very differently even when the targeting is identical, which is why testing multiple versions of a creative — the ad's image, video, and text — against each other matters so much on this platform.
When someone is ready to act, Meta lets them do it without ever leaving the app, through lead forms — a short form built directly into Facebook or Instagram that collects someone's information on the spot. Adding qualifying questions to that form means you find out upfront whether someone actually fits what you're selling, instead of finding out after you've already called them.

Why it matters for your business
Not every kind of business gets to wait for someone to search. If what you sell is new to people, or something they didn't know they needed until they saw it, search advertising has nothing to work with — there's no demand to capture yet. Meta can create that first moment of awareness.
It also closes a gap that search leaves open: the people who found you, looked around, and left. Without retargeting, that visit is wasted the moment they close the tab. With it, your business stays in front of them instead of disappearing the second they leave your site.
The tradeoff is that creative does the heavy lifting here, and creative wears out. An ad that performs well today will fatigue as the same audience sees it too many times, which is why this channel needs ongoing attention rather than a set-it-and-forget-it setup.
What usually goes wrong
Most agencies run the same three ads for months, don't segment audiences properly, and blame iOS changes when performance drops.
Sound familiar?
- Ad fatigue killing performance every few weeks
- No structured creative testing — just boosting posts
- Retargeting audiences are too broad or nonexistent
Prospecting finds new customers. Retargeting brings back the ones who almost were.
What we actually do
Prospecting and retargeting run together
We build campaigns that find new people who fit your customer profile, and separate campaigns that bring back the people who already visited your site, so each one is judged on the job it's actually doing.
Lead forms with qualifying questions
Where a lead form makes sense, we build in questions that filter for fit upfront, so you spend your time following up with people worth following up with.
Structured creative testing
New ad variations are tested against each other deliberately, not swapped in randomly, so we can tell you with confidence which image, video, or message is actually working and why.
Winning ads refreshed in place
When an ad is performing, we refresh it without starting it over from scratch, which preserves the momentum and learning it's already built up instead of resetting the account's progress.
Pixel and Conversions API tracking
We install the Pixel — a snippet of code that reports back what happens on your site — alongside the Conversions API, a more direct, reliable way of sending that same information to Meta, so your results are measured as accurately as the platform allows.
Conversion tracking built and tested before launch
Forms, calls, and purchases are wired up and verified before a dollar is spent. If we can't measure what a lead is, we don't start.
Budget moved toward what produces customers
Spend shifts continually toward the audiences and ads producing real inquiries, away from the ones only producing likes and views.
What to expect when we work together
A real conversation
We start by understanding who your customer actually is, what you sell, and whether people need to be found or need to be introduced to you.
An audit of what exists
If you've run Meta ads before, we look at what was tried, what the creative looked like, and where the tracking broke down.
A written plan
You see the audiences, campaign structure, and creative approach we intend to test, explained in plain language before anything launches.
Tracking built first
The Pixel and Conversions API go in and get tested against real form fills and purchases. This is a gate, not a step — no tracking, no spend.
Launch and the learning period
New creative and audiences need time to gather data. We'll tell you plainly what's an early real result and what's just the algorithm still figuring things out.
Plain-English reporting on a rhythm
You get reports that show which ads and audiences are actually producing inquiries, written for a business owner, not an analyst.
Decisions made together
Which creative gets more budget, and which audience gets dropped, is a conversation. You'll always know what changed and why.

A good fit if
- You want to reach people before they start searching
- You have visuals, video, or a story that can stop a scroll
- You're getting site visitors who leave without converting
- You're comfortable testing and refreshing creative regularly
Probably not yet
- You have no photos, video, or way to produce creative at all
- You need every lead to be pre-sold with no follow-up required
- You want a guaranteed volume of leads in a specific week
- You expect one ad to work indefinitely without ever changing it
